Emailing chunks of records to people interested in transcribing was extremely inefficient, difficult to track, and an overly stressful method.
“My experience has been resoundingly positive. Since the very first day we uploaded our documents to the website, we’ve had volunteers from around the globe dive into the project. Additionally, using FromThePage provides a centralized place where I can send volunteers who are interested in transcribing, where I can answer questions quickly and easily, and where I can track progress on the project. Previously, I had been emailing chunks of records to people who were interested in transcribing, which was an extremely inefficient, difficult to track, and overly stressful method. Using FromThePage has streamlined my entire operation and greatly improved the quality and speed of our transcriptions.”
— Dr. Camille Westmont, Visiting Professor of History at Sewanee: The University of the South
Ticked all the boxes: Ability to import, host, and export documents and content, mechanisms to track progress, and ways to learn how collaborators were working.
“We're so glad we found FromThePage! We'd been looking for a program to facilitate this project for some time, and FromThePage ticked all the boxes for us: ability to import, host, and export documents and content, mechanisms to track progress, and ways to learn about how our collaborators were working on the project were all important to us.”
— Kelly Riddle, Digital Projects Coordinator at LA County Library
Easy for all users to simultaneously edit, review, and track progress.
“FromThePage has proven to be a very versatile tool. It’s a great platform for collaborative work, making it easy for all users to simultaneously edit, review, and track progress within a collection. The management features also allow a lot of flexibility. Using the field-based transcription option, for example, we’ve created projects to tag works and collect metadata so our collaborators can assist with content description, in addition to transcribing. The software lends itself to creative uses by allowing administrators to configure projects and access the data in a variety of ways.”
— Erin Wilson, Digital Imaging Specialist and Lab Manager at Ohio University Libraries

A Software Solution That Actually Works
We’ll also do a custom demo of our software to show you how FromThePage can be configured to accomplish your specific goals with your actual materials. Including sharing case studies of other users to show how our features can support your research in a variety of ways.
The following features are especially relevant and utilized by our linguist clients:
- Unicode. Any text may be transcribed in UNICODE-supported scripts. (Support beyond the UNICODE Basic Multilingual Plane available upon request.)
- Right-to-Left Text Direction. Text language may be set per document, so that justification and cursor control is appropriate for texts written in Arabic, Urdu, or Yiddish.
- Private Projects. Project owners can grant access to specific people only if they wish. Used to restrict editing to members of a small research team or to provide control over the project materials to members of indigenous communities.
- Subject Linking. Users may tag subjects like toponyms or personal names, automatically creating an index in the text, preserving variant phrases or spellings used to refer to the same subject.
- TEI Tagging. Most projects transcribe text with user-friendly wiki encoding, which can be exported as HTML, plaintext, or TEI-XML. We also support encoding using a small set of TEI tags which can be used to produce a more high-fidelity text.
- TEI-XML Export. Any project can be exported as P5-compliant TEI-XML.

What More Scholars Are Saying About FromThePage
Having good quality transcripts that can be verified and worked on by multiple people means we can more easily share and discuss this work.
“Howitt and Fison were two of the first anthropologists that studied the Aboriginal people of southern and eastern Australia. Their methodical work on Aboriginal language, kinship, song and culture was pioneering at the time and the information they amassed is now a treasure trove of Australian Aboriginal history. FromThePage is making the transcription work much easier to do and we’re able to collaborate with historians, linguists, anthropologists and Aboriginal people in making these transcripts. We’re also hoping that Aboriginal communities in Australia who are interested in language revitalization will use these resources. FromThePage is so useful for us, as having good quality transcripts that can be verified and worked on by multiple people (including expert linguists and interested Aboriginal people) means that we can more easily share and discuss this work with more and more people.”
— Jason Gibson, Anthropologist and Curator at Melbourne Museum in Australia
Incredibly useful in cultivating community engagement, developing research initiatives, and enhancing collection accessibility.
“With all of its features, FromThePage has proven to be incredibly useful for us in cultivating community engagement, developing research initiatives, and enhancing collection accessibility. This is primarily due to the customization the platform enables. On the one hand, project contributors have the ability to reconfigure with relative ease their workspace and workflows, such as using dictation to transcribe. On the project management side, the import and export features being designed and deployed as part of the NEH-funded work with UT Libraries will greatly facilitate the movement of collections between our institutional repositories and the platform to expedite access and preserve citizen scholarship.”
— Allyssa Guzman, Digital Scholarship Librarian at the University of Texas at Austin Libraries & Albert Palacios, Digital Scholarship Coordinator at the University of Texas for the LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections
Powerful yet simple wiki-like annotation and indexing feature.
“The killer feature that takes FromThePage well beyond other transcription interfaces I have seen [...] is the powerful yet simple wiki-like annotation and indexing feature. Using simple double brackets, or an optional automatic suggested markup feature, simple transcriptions immediately become “tagged” (though only for items explicit in a text, rather than arbitrary tags) in a truly powerful way, allowing visitors to find documents through a index of subjects, places, or people – or jump immediately from linked subjects within a text to others like it in what becomes a rich hypertext environment.”
