The following features are especially relevant and utilized by our linguist clients:

Unicode. Any text may be transcribed in UNICODE-supported scripts. (Support beyond the UNICODE Basic Multilingual Plane available upon request.)

Right-to-Left Text Direction. Text language may be set per document, so that justification and cursor control is appropriate for texts written in Arabic, Urdu, or Yiddish.

Private Projects. Project owners can grant access to specific people only if they wish. Used to restrict editing to members of a small research team or to provide control over the project materials to members of indigenous communities.

Subject Linking. Users may tag subjects like toponyms or personal names, automatically creating an index in the text, preserving variant phrases or spellings used to refer to the same subject.

TEI Tagging. Most projects transcribe text with user-friendly wiki encoding, which can be exported as HTML, plaintext, or TEI-XML. We also support encoding using a small set of TEI tags which can be used to produce a more high-fidelity text.

TEI-XML Export. Any project can be exported as P5-compliant TEI-XML.

Case Studies Using FromThePage

John Howard, the University Librarian of University College Dublin is spearheading a project transcribing Gaelic language material for use by researchers. The transcriptions are then exported back into their digital library systems to make them full text searchable. Their project includes in depth tutorial material on Gaelic paleography for students.

Modern scholars may need unpublished research from earlier scholars, such as linguistic surveys of speakers of the Mesoamerican language Mixtec. By transcribing the responses, linguists like Ryan Sullivant (Language Data Curator, Archive of Indigenous Languages of Latin America, University of Texas at Austin) can analyze the Mixtec language spoken 40 years ago. The results are encoded as datasets, and preserved in the AILLA repository. See what Ryan says about this work here.

Dr Mulaika Hijjas is an Associate Professor in South East Asian Studies at SOAS University of London working on folk tales written in the Malay language, using the Jawi script, which is based on Arabic. This work concentrated on transliterating them into the Latin-based script used today. This makes them readable by modern Malay speakers; as well as searchable and accessible to scholars and members of the public alike.

The Codex Aubin is richly illustrated, and of interest to art historians studying Aztec codices. However, few art historians understand Classical Nahuatl, the language of the text. Translation by linguists allows the art historians and linguists to collaborate on the codices. This work is led by Barbara Mundy, a Professor of Art History at Fordham University.

Many indigenous communities want to work with texts for their own purposes, without intervention by outsiders. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has transcribed primary sources in Dakȟóta/Lakȟóta to create material for language revitalization. The project is private; people outside the community may not view it.
