From the "Finding Their Names" Project: Typical Historical Documents in Context with Slavery in the U.S. South and the Lives of Enslaved Persons -- April 17, 2025

This presentation will present analyses and brief cases studies of certain typical documents employed as legal and practical standards of institutionalized slavery in the U.S. South (and elsewhere), with the intent to center personal facts of the enslaved persons these documents describe.

Will Stanier is a librarian at the University of Georgia's Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. He is currently the project coordinator for the archival collections project, "Finding Their Names: Description and Discovery of Enslavement Events.
