Introducing Read-only Document Sets

March 7, 2025 by Sara Brumfield

Over the last several years, FromThePage has supported document sets to allow project owners to aggregate a sub-set of works in a collection.

The feature has been used these ways:

  • Thematic groups of works within a collection
Mount Auburn uses document sets to make it easier to find particular types of documents
  • Access control, providing access to certain works to certain users, or opening some works to the public for transcription while keeping others private
The Frederick Douglass Papers has some documents in public sets and others in private sets
  • Workflow management, letting project owners move works between stages of transcription, review, annotation, proofreading, and publication
Civil War & Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi moves documents between document sets depending on where they are in their workflow
  • Based on suggestions from community members, we’re adding a new feature: read-only document sets.

This feature not only allows project owners to curate collections that can be publicly accessible for reading but also ensures that the integrity of the works is maintained by restricting editing to authorized collaborators.

We're curious -- how will you use read-only document sets?
