AI in FromThePage is always optional, transparent and tentative – we don’t run AI on your material without explicit permission, and we flag and log every use of AI in transcriptions.
AI technology -- and FromThePage with it -- is changing really fast. Here's the current state of our AI features.
Our flagship AI feature is “AI Drafts” using Google’s Gemini 3 models (the most trustworthy model for transcription of handwritten text). If you want to get straight to the meat, here’s how to use it.
AI Drafts
Prefer a deep dive? Here’s the YouTube recording of the webinar introducing the feature – why we built it, how it works, and what we learned.
In addition to our AI drafts, we also have an AI tab for every page that has AI transcription available. That tab includes everything we know about the AI run:
- Character and Word Error Rates when compared against human edited transcriptions
- The reasoning returned from the large language model. This is great for AI literacy and understanding how an LLM claims to be thinking about transcription. We wrote a newsletter about one surprising aspect of that reasoning.
- Token Usage: After hosting a webinar about energy usage by LLMs, we added the token count for each page and project.

One surprise? We’ve found that good handwritten text recognition is changing what volunteers are willing to work on – much harder material than before!
We also have an integration with Transkribus that we call “AI Assist”. In addition to an AI draft for each page, you can turn on an overlay of the text over the image. You can also export a human transcribed collection to use to train Transkribus models.

Transkribus integration includes a charge per page; contact support to enable it.
